I'm going to Iowa this weekend. Back to the old stomping grounds. I'm not letting the 2YG know that I'll be in town, though. I secretly want to run into her at a party or at a bar and see what happens. If it happens, I hope it's damn awkward for her.

Anyway, the point of the trip is to have some fun back on Wartburg campus and see a few people before they graduate. This is pretty much the last year I have some sort of excuse to party on campus, since I know a few of the 2YG's friends and my old roomate's GF & Friends are the same age. Once they all graduate, though, we'll be those weird old guys. Don't want to be that. So I have to take advantage of the connections I have now....

I'm excited, to say the least. Plus, I'm going down to Iowa with a guy I haven't hung out with in forever. All in all, it should be an enlightening, envigorating, and exciting weekend.

booyea.

I can't believe what I just heard someone say. It made my English major ears bleed.

"Books are the worst investment ever. They're obsolete. Why buy a book when you can find anything you need on the internet?"

Wow.

I haven't been playing guitar as much lately. I'm a little disappointed in myself. My recent laziness all kind of stems from 2 weekends ago, the Friday before St. Patrick's day. I knew I was going out with Doppleganger, S., and the Slutty Waitress (trying out some new nicknames) on the next night, so I was taking it easy. A couple of beers, a movie, and some noodling on the guitar. In between noodling and a sip of beer, one of my guitar strings snapped. The Low E string, to be exact. I wasn't even playing it. It was just sitting there on my living room floor when, SPRONG! The frickin thing snapped.

ARRRRGGGGHHHH! I JUST BOUGHT NEW STRINGS!!!!

I'm not sure if I have mentioned it yet, but the guitar I inherited through the family is a classical guitar, which means nylon strings, which means changing the strings like once a month, which means, apparently, sometimes the strings just randomly snap while you're watching The Wedding Crashers and drinking a Coors Original. Yet another reason I can't wait to purchase a real acoustic guitar.

So then on Saturday I bought new strings on the way to S. & the Slutty Waitress's place, with all intent to restring it on Sunday. Well, see that day's post for all reasons why that didn't happen. And then my brother flew in from San Fran Monday night, which meant we went out for dinner and drinks for St. Patty's day, and no guitar re-stringing. Tuesday he was leaving, but first it was dinner with him and mom, and then I got home at a decent hour....but had no beer in the house. And the two major stipulations I have for taking on that task is drinking beer and listening to good music....otherwise I'd probably get pissed off that I had to restring it twice in 2 weeks.

And then somehow it just really didn't get done until late in the week, and the weekend happened and it was all out of tune, and then I dunno. I finally got it in tune and the strings all properly stretched out yesterday. And now tonight I got back to playing again.

The point of this extraordinarily long introduction, is that tonight I was playing around with some different chords and strumming patterns when I stumbled upon something that actually sounded halfway decent, and not like some idiot bumbling along with an out-of-tune guitar.

It was a pretty good chord progression, but I could tell that something was missing. I could hear in my head the chord that I wanted next, but none of the chords I knew fit it. I could probably figure out what I wanted if I had a piano in front of me, but alas. I live in an apartment.

But wait, yes, dial up mom-the-music-teacher, pop the phone on speaker, work through the chords with her on the piano, and figure out the missing link. And we did. And it was grand.

I really think I need to take lessons from someone, though. Step one is get a real guitar that won't break when it's not even being played. Then I'll look into lessons. Yep.

What I'm drinking: Water. I'm trying to save up for what's shaping up to be a pretty good weekend.
