So last night I went to the Uptown Bar with some Lakeville friends to listen to Sherbetty, a band from Lakeville originally called BCW (Bust Captain Whitey), lead by Casey Prescott on vocals and guitar, Scott Slepicka on drums, Luke Stangohr on lead guitar, and then a guy from Lakeville whose name escapes me on base and another dude on guitar/keys. This is the second time I've seen them live since mid-January and I gotta say...they're pretty badass.

I sang tenor with Casey in a couple of choirs in high school...including the much over-dramatized Now & Then group, but I'd never really classify him as a "friend," more of an aquaintence, if you will. A couple of years after I graduated from high school, I ran into Casey and he gave me their demo CD, which I've shared with many friends over the years and really quite enjoyed. After that, I had followed them from afar -- being in Iowa didn't really let me go to any of their shows, and when I was actually in Minnesota, they usually played at bars like Renegades in Savage...and that doesn't really motivate me to go watch them.

Then, a few months ago I became Casey's friend on Facebook, and that was cool. And then he sent out an invite to basically everyone he knew that they were playing at the Uptown bar on a Thursday night. The bar being about a mile from my place, I couldn't pass up the show, so I convinced a friend I hadn't hung out with in years to stay up waaaaay too late on a Thursday night and see the show. It rocked.

Then on Friday I got word they were headlining on Saturday night at the same bar and so I rallied the troops and we all went out to hear them again. Quite frankly, I'm damn impressed with both their sound and their stage presence. They know how to put on a show, damnit. They even closed with a cover of Atmosphere's "God Loves Ugly." Sherbetty's version reminds me of a mix of RTM and the Beastie Boys, which are my fav two bands. So there ya go.

Anyway, the point of the story is if you're in the area, you've gotta catch one of their shows. I'm a huge fan. Spread the word.

word.
